Potency

Potency is a measure of the concentration, strength or activity of a medication. Specifications for potency are typically expressed as a range such as but not limited to 90.0 – 110.0% of labeled value. Potency is one of several tests conducted for lot release of a product

Study Outline

Potency assay methods are provided in individual USP drug monographs.  Typical methods used are High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), UV-Vis, and Titration.  A method verification study as described in USP <1226? Verification of Compendial Procedures must first be conducted.
